perception

Long-time readers of our blog will know that we’ve written, almost obsessively, about how the way you paint your home affects how people will perceive you. Colour psychology has a real pull on people’s perceptions, and they might read into who you are as a person based on the colours you choose for your exterior and interior. The thing they may read into the most? The aesthetics of your front door. The front door is the portal to your home; does it read as inviting, or imposing? Is it clear to make out as you pass, or is it hidden and unwelcoming? How you want your home to be perceived, how welcoming you want to seem - it should all be considered when you’re painting your door.

To understand colour psychology, I strongly recommend reading through our other blog posts on the topic. The briefest, highest level summary I can give is this: warm, bright colours will make your front door seem welcoming, while cool, darker colours will make it seem more imposing or formal. The technical elements that you should consider when painting your front door are quite interesting; it has much to do with the colours of your home’s siding, and how the rest of the exterior is painted.

Neutral sidings give you the most opportunity to play with door colour, because they go well with pretty much anything; that’s why they’re neutral! Changing the colour of your door is a great way of standing out while still keeping with the neighborhood’s aesthetic, especially if the aesthetic is scaled back neutrals. You can opt for all kinds of colours for your door with neutral sidings; bright reds and yellows, deep purples, even black, depending on the feeling you want your door to invoke.

When you have a colourful siding, your door should almost always contrast with the siding; that is, if you want people to find it! Doors with contrast stand out, and invite people to come towards them, while doors that blend in might send a sign that you’re not particularly interested in having guests over. Finding the proper paint colour to contrast while still lending to the overall aesthetic can be difficult, but great house painters will offer colour consultation services that can help you find the perfect shade for your door.

An oft neglected but extremely important element of your door is the hardware. Depending on the look of your door, you might opt for brass, gold, or even black door handles and locks. You might also want to give an air of sophistication and futurism; there are really interesting smart locks available from LocksmithMAN that can be opened with an app, a voice command, or even the touch of your finger. True aesthetic brilliance is about combining all of the different facets of your vision, from the primary exterior paint, to the accent and trim, to the colour of the door, to how it’s unlocked, leading to your home’s interior. Your door, then, is a small part of a big vision; we’re here to help that vision come to life.
